Murundu, Zambia

Debbie Joy School
The Debbie Joy School was founded in 2010 in the village of Murundu with a few village children under a small corrugated shelter.  Today the school serves about 500 Pre-K through 12th graders and has been accredited as a community school by the Zambian Ministry of Education. Educational focus is on literacy, math and Christian education.  Tuition, as well as school breakfast, lunch, and medical care is free for all students.

Government-provided education is free for all children in Zambia. However, the cost of school uniforms, school shoes, books, and exam fees is prohibitive for many families.  As a result, many children in communities like Murundu don't attend school at all, or drop out to help their parents farm or do piece-work (odd jobs for cash).  At DJS, we support the most vulnerable children in the community, many of whom are single or double orphans, by covering all those costs for our students, and in some cases providing housing and food through the Family Partners program.

Government schools in the Copperbelt where we work typically have more than 70 students per teacher.  At DJS, we limit class sizes to about 35 students to improve the contact time between teachers and students. All teachers at Debbie Joy School hold Zambian teacher certificates, diplomas, or degrees.
